AEO for building-products manufacturers and builders' merchants
AEO for building products means that when a specifier, contractor, self-builder or homeowner asks an AI assistant a product question, the answer names you and quotes your data.
The usual gaps are practical and fixable: sites that turn AI readers away, technical data locked in PDFs, old brand names that never got joined up, and branches AI can't see. We find them, fix them with your team, and measure the result every month.

Why it matters
How are construction buyers using AI?
Specifiers, trades and homeowners all ask AI now. Each group asks different questions, and each question has a supplier it could name.

Google's AI Mode has been live in Ireland since October 2025 (Irish Times). Grant, BER and insulation questions are exactly the kind it answers.
When we checked search results for Irish wall-insulation grant questions in September 2026, installers and SEAI supplied most of the answers. Merchants did not appear.
The common gaps
Where do building-product companies lose the AI answer?
These are the gaps our research found across Irish manufacturers and merchants in September 2026. Each one shows up in an audit, and each has a clear fix.

Sites that turn AI readers away
Some Irish merchant sites we tested in September 2026 refused an AI-style request outright. One robots.txt let a training bot in and shut out the bots that fetch pages for live answers.
The audit tests about ten answer and training bots live, scoring the answer bots separately, and reviews your CDN and firewall rules. Since 15 September 2026, Cloudflare blocks some AI crawlers by default on new sites, so a correct robots.txt is no longer enough on its own.
Specification data locked in PDFs
Lambda values, U-values by build-up, fire class, certificate numbers, declaration of performance references and EPD summaries often live only in PDFs. We put the key values into the page text and keep the PDFs as mirrors.
Old names that never got joined up
After a rebrand, directories, Wikidata and old listings keep the former name alive, and assistants repeat it. We link old and new names across directories, trade listings, LinkedIn, Wikidata and your sameAs links, and retire dead listings.
Comparison questions answered by someone else
Questions like “PIR or mineral wool?” or one board brand against another are answered today by retailer blogs and forum threads. The manufacturer's own voice is missing. We write honest comparison pages with your technical team, with the year in the title and the figures that decide the choice.
Part L, NZEB and grant questions
Build-ups that meet Part L and NZEB, BER uplift and SEAI grant explainers are answered by installers today, not merchants. We build compliance and how-to hubs, dated and refreshed after each Budget.
Branches and stock AI can't see
“150mm PIR in stock near Waterford” is a local, stock-level question. Merchant Center with a local inventory feed, and a complete Google Business Profile for every branch, give assistants the data to answer it with your branch. Google Business Profile is the source behind 28.6% of local AI citations (BrightLocal, September 2026).
Regulation
What does the new Construction Products Regulation change?
The EU Construction Products Regulation 2024/3110 has applied since 8 January 2026 (EUR-Lex). It combines the declaration of performance and the declaration of conformity into one DoPC, and it phases in Digital Product Passports.
Product data is moving online anyway. Doing it now, in readable page text, serves AI assistants and the regulation at the same time.
- Specification pages in HTML. Lambda, U-values by build-up, thickness, fire class, certificate numbers, the declaration reference and an EPD summary, in the page text.
- PDFs kept as mirrors. The page carries the values. The PDF carries the formal, signed document.
- Ready for passports. Structured product data now means less rework when passports reach your product family.
- Your team decides. This is our reading of the regulation for web content, not legal advice. Your technical and compliance people confirm what goes live.
Third-party proof
Which sources do AI assistants trust for building products?
A June 2026 UK study of which construction suppliers AI recommends found that awards, specification databases and third-party technical references drove the mentions. Niche manufacturers could lead narrow product categories (Tenacious Marketing).
That is good news for specialists. You don't need the biggest brand to own your category's answer.
- Trade press and CPD. Earned coverage, not wire releases: 84% of AI citations come from earned media (Muck Rack).
- NBS Source and BIM objects. NBS draws on more than 12,500 specification-ready products with EPDs from NBS Source and ECO Portal (NBS). Complete entries and downloadable BIM objects put you where specifiers look.
- Video. In a US-weighted 2026 survey, 72% of architects used YouTube for product research (Farnsworth). Long-form installation and build-up explainers serve specifiers and trades alike: 94% of the YouTube videos AI assistants cite are long form (Otterly, March 2026).
- Merchant Center and local inventory. About 65% of ChatGPT product picks now come from merchant feeds (Profound, via Relevant Audience). For a merchant, the feed is an AEO asset.
- A Google Business Profile per branch. Complete hours, services, trade counter details and reviews for every location, with Apple Business Connect and Bing Places alongside for Siri and Copilot.
- Self-build and low-energy titles. Guides and case studies in the publications homeowners and self-builders read.
The prompt panel
Which prompts should you win, by buyer type?
Your audit panel is built around the people who buy from you. These are typical prompts from our research in Ireland. Your list is agreed with you and published in every scorecard.

Grants, costs and what is worth it
- “best attic insulation Ireland”
- “how much is the SEAI attic grant 2026”
- “is external wall insulation worth it”
- “EWI cost per m² Ireland”
Brands, prices and build-ups

The 90-day programme
What does the programme do for a manufacturer or merchant?
It follows the plan from your audit, in three overlapping phases. Scorecards at weeks 4, 8 and 12 show what moved. A before-and-after write-up follows at week 13.

Open the doors, fix the basics
Crawl access first: firewall, Cloudflare and robots rules for the search and user-fetch bots. Bing Webmaster Tools, Search Console, sitemap and IndexNow. For merchants, Merchant Center and local inventory feed fixes, with the feed also sent to Microsoft Merchant Center for Copilot.
Join up the brand, build the proof
Trade-press stories, CPD, NBS Source entries and BIM objects. A complete Google Business Profile per branch. Long-form YouTube explainers. A review programme. Rebrand clean-up across directories, LinkedIn, Wikidata and sameAs.
Put the answers in the page
Specification data on product pages. Part L and NZEB build-ups, BER uplift and SEAI grant explainers. Comparison pages such as PIR vs mineral wool. A refresh cadence after each Budget and regulation change.
FAQ
AEO for building products: common questions
What is AEO for a building-products company?
Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the work that gets your products and branches named, and your data quoted, when buyers ask AI assistants. For building products, that means AI can read your site, your technical data is in the page text, your old and new brand names are joined up, and trade and specification sources back you up.
Do we need to take our PDFs down?
No. Keep your certificates, declarations of performance and EPDs as PDFs. Put the key values (lambda, U-values by build-up, fire class, certificate numbers, the declaration reference and an EPD summary) in the page text as well, so assistants can read and quote them.
How do we know if our site is blocking AI assistants?
Run the free AI access check. It shows in about a minute whether AI assistants can read your site at all. The AI Visibility Audit goes further: it tests about ten answer and training bots live and reviews your robots, CDN and firewall rules. A blocked request in a test is confirmed against your CDN or server logs before we report it as a finding.
Does the Construction Products Regulation affect our website?
It pushes product data online. Regulation (EU) 2024/3110 has applied since 8 January 2026, combines the declarations of performance and conformity into one DoPC, and phases in Digital Product Passports (EUR-Lex). Structured specification pages serve AI assistants and prepare you for passports. This is our reading for web content, not legal advice.
We have a lot of branches. What changes?
Local questions, like stock near a town or next-day delivery, are answered from local data. Every branch needs a complete Google Business Profile, and merchants need Merchant Center with a local inventory feed. Multi-branch work fits the extended audit, and sits at the upper end of the programme.
Do you work with UK manufacturers and merchants?
Yes. The extended audit covers Ireland and the UK in one panel. For UK work, the Future Homes Standard takes effect on 24 March 2027 (Home Energy Model Guide), which gives a clear calendar for build-up and compliance content.
How much does AEO cost for a building-products company?
The AI Visibility Audit is a fixed fee, quoted on a short call: one brand in one market covers 30 buyer prompts, and the extended audit covers multi-brand, Ireland plus UK, or ecommerce with a feed review and 50 prompts. It is credited in full against the programme if you sign within 60 days. The programme and the retainer are quoted from what the audit finds, because the work scales with brands, feeds and branches. The retainer comes in three tiers, by how many buyer questions we track and how much we publish each month. Full details are on the pricing page.
