AEO for online pharmacies and health and beauty retailers
AEO for an online pharmacy means being the shop an AI assistant names when someone asks where to buy SPF, which pharmacy delivers next day, or whether a pharmacist can treat a UTI.
The biggest levers are your product feed, your buying guides and your branch listings. Every piece is built to the medicines rules and signed off by your superintendent pharmacist before it goes live.

Why it matters
How has AI shopping changed for pharmacy and beauty retail?
This summer, ChatGPT moved its shopping answers onto product feeds. The biggest stores gained share, and many smaller merchants dropped out.

For Irish retailers, AI shopping is about discovery, not checkout. OpenAI retired Instant Checkout on 24 March 2026 (Digital Commerce 360), and Google's checkout in AI Mode is limited to the US, Canada and Australia (Merchant Center Help).
Paid routes are closed too. ChatGPT ads don't run in personal health conversations, and healthcare and medicine advertising is limited to the US (Onemetrik). For a pharmacy, organic visibility is the route.
Answer content
What questions should an online pharmacy answer?
These are the six content areas in our pharmacy programme. Each has a different risk level under the medicines rules, and we plan them that way.

The Common Conditions Service
Pharmacists can now treat eight common conditions, including UTIs, cold sores and shingles, under a national service launched in January 2026 (PSI, Farmers Journal). It is a new question set that AI answers poorly.
We build one hub per condition: citing the HSE, generic medicine names only, a named pharmacist with PSI number, and a review date.
Beauty, skincare and SPF buying guides
Skincare and SPF guides are cosmetics content, outside the medicines rules. When we checked Irish search results in September 2026, independent pharmacies, skincare e-tailers and editorial round-ups held these answers, not the big chains.
Supplements
“Best vitamin D for winter” is a big seasonal question. Supplement content uses only the health claims authorised on the EU Register (European Commission), word for word.
Reviews at scale
Assistants lean on what others say about you: 84% of AI citations come from earned media (Muck Rack). We run the review programme across Trustpilot, Google seller ratings and on-site product reviews.
A seasonal calendar
Hay fever from March to July. SPF from April to August. Flu vaccines from September to November. Vitamin D from Halloween to St Patrick's Day (FSAI). Christmas gifting. Each season's pages are refreshed before the questions start.
A complete profile for every branch
Questions like “flu vaccine [town]” and “pharmacy open late [town]” are answered from local listings. One complete Google Business Profile per branch lists your services, the Common Conditions Service, late hours and flu clinics. Business Profiles are the source behind 28.6% of local AI citations (BrightLocal, September 2026).
Be in the feed or be invisible
Why is your Merchant Center feed now an AEO asset?
Because the assistants read it. Most ChatGPT product picks now come from merchant feeds, and most carousel items trace back to Google Shopping data.
A thin feed gives a thin answer. We treat the feed as content and fix it first.
- Complete identifiers. GTINs and brand on every product.
- Rich attributes. Skin type, SPF, fragrance-free, vegan and age range: the details shoppers put in their questions.
- A product ratings feed. Your reviews attached to your products.
- Local inventory. Click and collect stock, branch by branch.
- Every AI shopping surface. Google Merchant Center with free listings on (AI Mode and Gemini) and Microsoft Merchant Center (Copilot). The OpenAI product feed targets the US today, so we submit it as soon as Irish merchants are eligible.
- Eligibility checked first. Merchant Center rules for over-the-counter medicines vary by country, so we confirm yours with Google before planning around them.
Compliance-safe AEO
How do you do AEO without breaking the medicines rules?
Pharmacy is regulated. The most obvious AEO move, a pharmacist recommending a branded product, is exactly the one the rules forbid. So compliance is built into every workflow, not added at the end.

Every piece is signed off by your superintendent pharmacist and checked against the HPRA's rules and Article 90 of Directive 2001/83 before it goes live. We never promote prescription-only medicines.
Superintendent pharmacist approval
Nothing goes live without it. The sign-off step sits inside the monthly content schedule, so each piece is planned around it rather than rushed past it.
The rules on advertising medicines
Content about medicines follows the HPRA's rules on promoting medicines to the public (HPRA). Over-the-counter content matches the product's Summary of Product Characteristics and encourages rational use.
No endorsements, no equivalence claims
Directive 2001/83 Art. 90 bans medicine advertising that uses recommendations from health professionals, scientists or celebrities, or that claims a medicine is better than or equivalent to another (Art. 90). So no “our pharmacist recommends [brand]”, and no “same as [brand], half the price”.
No promotion of prescription-only medicines
Prescription-only medicines can't be sold online in Ireland (PSI) or advertised to the public, including on pharmacy websites (HPRA). We never target weight-loss injection, ED or other prescription-only prompts with promotional content.
Generic names, HSE sources
Condition hubs are health information, not advertising. They use generic medicine names (the active ingredient or class), cite the HSE, and signpost to “ask your pharmacist”.
Registration you can see
Your PSI registration and Internet Supply List entry are shown on the site (PSI), and the EU common logo appears on every page that sells non-prescription medicines.
This is our understanding of the rules, not legal advice. Each client's superintendent pharmacist or regulatory adviser signs off every piece of content before it is published.
The prompt panel
Which prompts should an online pharmacy win?
Your audit panel is built from the questions your customers ask. These are typical prompts from our research in Ireland. Your list is agreed with you and published in every scorecard.

Where to buy
- “best online pharmacy Ireland”
- “online pharmacy Ireland next day delivery”
- “does [pharmacy] deliver to Northern Ireland”
Buying guides
- “where to buy [skincare brand] in Ireland”
- “best SPF for sensitive skin Ireland”
- “best vitamin D for winter Ireland”
What a pharmacist can do
- “can a pharmacist prescribe for a UTI in Ireland”
- “flu vaccine [town] book online”
Near me, now
- “pharmacy open late [town]”
- “click and collect pharmacy [town]”
Prompts we won't target with promotional content, for any client: weight-loss injections, ED treatments and other prescription-only medicines.
The 90-day programme
What does the programme do for a pharmacy retailer?
It follows the plan from your audit, in three overlapping phases. Scorecards at weeks 4, 8 and 12 show what moved. A before-and-after write-up follows at week 13.

Fix the feed and the basics
Merchant Center clean-up: GTINs, brand and rich attributes, with the feed also sent to Microsoft Merchant Center. Product ratings feed and local inventory. Bing Webmaster Tools, Search Console, sitemap, and crawler fixes at robots.txt and the CDN. PSI registration and Internet Supply List entry made visible.
Build proof and local presence
Outreach to the roundups and beauty features that assistants cite. A complete Google Business Profile per branch. A review programme across Trustpilot, seller ratings and product reviews.
Answer the questions, compliantly
Common Conditions hubs, skincare and SPF buying guides, supplements guides with authorised claims, and the seasonal calendar. Every piece signed off by your superintendent pharmacist.
FAQ
AEO for online pharmacies: common questions
What is AEO for an online pharmacy?
Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the work that gets your shop named, and your products picked, when people ask AI assistants where to buy or who can help. For an online pharmacy it rests on four things: a complete product feed, compliant buying guides and condition content, reviews at scale, and a complete listing for every branch.
Can our pharmacists recommend products in our content?
Not for medicines. Article 90 of Directive 2001/83 bans medicine advertising that uses recommendations from health professionals. Pharmacists can write and review condition information that uses generic names and doesn't push a product, and beauty and skincare content sits outside the medicines rules. This is our understanding, not legal advice: your superintendent pharmacist or regulatory adviser signs off every piece.
Will you create content about weight-loss injections or other prescription-only medicines?
No. Prescription-only medicines can't be sold online in Ireland or advertised to the public, and the HPRA's rules apply to pharmacy websites as well. We don't target those prompts with promotional content for any client.
Does ChatGPT shopping matter for an Irish pharmacy yet?
Yes, mostly through Google. About 83% of ChatGPT product-carousel items trace back to Google Shopping data (Athos), so your Merchant Center feed already shapes what ChatGPT shows. OpenAI's own shopping programme launched for US users first (OpenAI), and we have not yet confirmed that Irish merchants are eligible. We get your feeds ready now and apply when you are.
Do you work with health and beauty retailers that aren't pharmacies?
Yes. Skincare, beauty and wellness retailers use the same playbook: feeds, buying guides, reviews and branch listings. If you sell general-sale medicines, the advertising rules still apply to those pages, so the compliance step stays in.
How do you measure which pharmacies AI recommends?
We track your agreed prompts across ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Copilot, Perplexity and Claude, including your share of voice against online-first rivals. Answers vary from one run to the next, so we report percentages on 4-week rolling averages, never a single screenshot. Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and GA4's AI Assistant channel add the first-party view.
How much does AEO cost for an online pharmacy?
An online pharmacy with a product feed fits the extended AI Visibility Audit, which adds a feed review and 50 buyer prompts, and is credited in full against the programme if you sign within 60 days. The programme and the retainer are quoted from what the audit finds, and ecommerce with feeds or several branches sits at the upper end. The Scale retainer is built for regulated and ecommerce clients and includes the compliance workflow and per-branch listings. Full details are on the pricing page.
