Answer Engine Optimisation, or AEO, means making your business easy for AI assistants and search engines to understand, trust and cite when they answer a customer’s question. In plain English, it’s the work of turning your site into a clear, credible source so your business can be mentioned in AI-generated answers, not just listed in traditional search results.

For your business, this matters because more people now ask questions in tools like ChatGPT, Google’s AI answer box, Copilot and Perplexity instead of clicking through a list of blue links. If your business isn’t easy to understand in those systems, you can lose visibility even if your normal search rankings are strong.

AEO is closely related to SEO, which is search engine optimisation. The difference is the outcome you’re aiming for. Traditional SEO tries to win clicks from search results. AEO tries to help your business appear inside the answer itself, or be used as a source behind that answer.

That doesn’t mean writing vague copy “for AI”. Google says this is unnecessary in its guidance on optimising for generative AI features. What helps is clear answer content, strong evidence, real authorship, accurate business details and pages that directly cover the questions buyers ask.

In practice, that means publishing useful pages that answer real customer questions in plain English. It also means making sure your site basics are sound. Examples include robots.txt, your AI welcome sign, which is the small file that tells AI readers whether they’re invited in, and a sitemap, your site’s table of contents. Structured data, your machine-readable business card, can help systems confirm what your business is, but it’s best treated as hygiene rather than the main lever.

It also helps to be present beyond your own site. AI assistants often look for corroboration. That can come from review platforms, comparison pages, business listings, your LinkedIn company page and trusted third-party mentions. For local businesses, accurate profiles on Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect and Bing Places can support visibility. For product-led businesses, clear pricing pages, alternatives pages and merchant feeds can make your offer easier to compare and cite.

There’s no single “AI ranking position”. Different AI assistants use different sources and systems. Google now reports Generative AI impressions in Search Console, covering AI Overviews and AI Mode, according to Google’s Search Console update released worldwide on 31 August 2026. Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in public preview on 1 February 2026, including total citations and grounding queries, according to Microsoft Bing Webmaster Tools. OpenAI’s search also changed on 4 September 2026, when ChatGPT search began running on OpenAI’s own index called Labrador, with Bing used mainly in Deep Research, according to HelloWorld’s reviewed methodology dated 24 October 2026. The business takeaway is simple: being visible in one system doesn’t guarantee visibility in another.

A practical example helps. Imagine you run a family law firm in Cork. A potential client asks an AI assistant, “Who handles child custody cases in Cork, and what should I prepare for the first meeting?” If your site has a clear service page, a straightforward FAQ, a real solicitor byline, honest dates, local office details, and useful supporting mentions elsewhere on the web, your firm is more likely to be cited or summarised. If your site only has generic marketing copy, you’re less likely to appear.

So AEO isn’t a trick. It’s the discipline of making your business the best available answer. That usually means better content, better evidence, better distribution and fewer technical barriers for AI readers.

FAQs

Is AEO just another name for SEO?

No. They overlap, but they’re not the same. SEO focuses on earning visibility and clicks in search results. AEO focuses on helping your business become a source that AI assistants can use in their answers.

Do you need special markup to do AEO?

No. Structured data, your machine-readable business card, is useful hygiene because it helps machines confirm facts. But visible question-and-answer content, trustworthy sourcing, real authors and accessible pages matter more than markup alone.

How do you measure whether AEO is working?

Look for signs across several systems. Google Search Console now shows Generative AI impressions by page, country, date and device, according to Google’s worldwide release on 31 August 2026. Bing Webmaster Tools shows AI citations and grounding queries in its AI Performance report, according to Microsoft’s public preview launched on 1 February 2026. GA4 also added a default AI Assistant channel on 13 May 2026 for some assistant referrals, according to Google Analytics, but that number is only a floor because it doesn’t cover every AI surface.
