IndexNow is a fast update system that lets your website tell participating search engines when a page is new, changed, or removed, so they can check it sooner. In plain English, it’s a quicker way to raise your hand when your site changes. For businesses, it matters because it can speed up discovery in Bing, but it’s not a direct lever for most AI assistants. As of 4 September 2026, HelloWorld treats IndexNow as a Bing and Copilot hygiene step, not a ChatGPT lever, because ChatGPT search runs on OpenAI’s own index, called Labrador, and uses Bing mainly in Deep Research.
What IndexNow means for your business
If you publish new pages often, or update product, location, pricing, or stock information, IndexNow can help search engines notice those changes faster. That can be useful if you want your latest information to appear in Bing results sooner.
For most businesses, the practical value is straightforward. It reduces the delay between changing a page and having Bing come back to look at it. That’s helpful, but limited. It doesn’t guarantee rankings. It doesn’t guarantee citations in AI assistants. It’s a housekeeping task, not a growth strategy.
How it relates to getting found in AI search
IndexNow is often overclaimed in AI search discussions. HelloWorld’s current view is narrower. We keep it because it’s cheap and checkable. We don’t sell it as a major lever.
The reason is that different AI assistants get their information in different ways. On 4 September 2026, HelloWorld updated its methodology after OpenAI search moved to its own index, Labrador, with search-result scraping as a fallback and Bing used mainly in Deep Research. That means Bing visibility no longer implies ChatGPT visibility. In other words, helping Bing discover a page faster can help Bing and Microsoft Copilot, but it’s not a direct route into ChatGPT search.
That distinction matters if you’re deciding where to spend time. If your goal is broader AI visibility, answer-first content, honest comparison pages, pricing pages, author pages, crawler access, and strong business profiles matter more than IndexNow alone. If you want the bigger picture, see our guide to what works in AEO.
Which AI assistants does IndexNow help?
Most clearly, it helps Bing’s ecosystem. That means it can support visibility in Bing search and can indirectly support Microsoft Copilot where Copilot relies on Bing’s web index.
It is not a direct lever for ChatGPT search. HelloWorld’s methodology states this clearly after the 4 September 2026 change. It’s also not something you should treat as a proven lever for Google’s AI features. Google has its own systems for finding and refreshing pages. HelloWorld classifies IndexNow as hygiene, not a core optimisation tactic.
A practical example
Imagine you run a chain of dental clinics. You update your emergency appointment page on Tuesday morning with new opening hours and a new location page for Cork. If your site uses IndexNow, Bing can be notified straight away that those pages changed. That may help Bing revisit them sooner than it otherwise would.
That is useful if someone searches in Bing later that day. It may also help if Copilot pulls from Bing’s web index. But if your goal is to be cited by ChatGPT, IndexNow on its own is not enough. You still need clear answer content, visible question-and-answer text, accurate business details, and open access for the right AI readers.
What not to assume
Do not assume IndexNow gets you into every AI assistant. It does not.
Do not assume it replaces a sitemap, your site’s table of contents that helps search engines find important pages. It does not.
Do not assume it matters more than crawler access. An AI reader can only use your pages if it is allowed in. Since 15 September 2026, HelloWorld also warns that Cloudflare can block some agent categories by default on ad-bearing pages for new zones, even when your robots.txt, your AI welcome sign, looks correct. That’s why crawler-access checks carry the same weight as robots.txt checks in our process.
FAQs
Is IndexNow worth setting up?
Yes, if your site changes regularly and you care about Bing visibility. It is low effort and easy to verify. Just don’t expect it to drive AI citations on its own.
Does IndexNow help ChatGPT?
Not directly, based on HelloWorld’s methodology update from 4 September 2026. ChatGPT search now uses OpenAI’s own index, called Labrador, with Bing used mainly in Deep Research. That makes IndexNow a Bing and Copilot lever, not a ChatGPT one.
Is IndexNow more important than content quality?
No. It only helps search engines notice changes faster. It does not make weak pages useful. For AI assistants, clear answers on the page matter more than technical signals on their own.
