ChatGPT Search vs Google AI Overviews: which matters more for your business?

A practical comparison of ChatGPT Search and Google AI Overviews for business: traffic, citation likelihood, query types and where to focus first.

Direct answer

For most businesses, both ChatGPT Search and Google AI Overviews matter, and much of the work serves both. They do run on different indexes: Google's for AI Overviews, and since September 2026 OpenAI's own for ChatGPT (Peec AI, September 2026). Let both sets of answer crawlers in, publish answer-first pages, and earn mentions on the sites each one trusts. If you must prioritise, start with Google AI Overviews because of Google's share of searches, and measure each separately.

What each platform is and how it works

Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of Google Search results for certain queries, above the traditional blue links. They synthesise information from multiple websites and cite those sources below the summary. Users can expand cited sources and click through to read more. Google uses its normal Googlebot crawl and index: Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet (Google). Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding, not AI Overviews.

AI Overviews are triggered for complex, multi-part, or research-oriented queries. They do not appear on every search. Google selects which query types benefit from an AI summary. When they do appear, click-through rates to individual websites tend to drop sharply, making it critical to be the cited source rather than the ignored alternative.

ChatGPT Search

ChatGPT Search is OpenAI's web search feature, available within the ChatGPT interface. When a question needs current or specific information, ChatGPT searches OpenAI's own index, built by OAI-SearchBot, with search-result scraping as a fallback. Until September 2026 it relied mainly on Bing; it now uses Bing mainly in Deep Research. ChatGPT-User fetches pages live, and GPTBot is for model training only.

Andy Pickup of MKM Building Supplies told the BBC that ChatGPT was sending more visitors to their site than Google's own built-in AI, a notable finding given Google's total search dominance. This suggests ChatGPT users are actively choosing it as a search tool and following through to cited sources at a meaningful rate.

How do ChatGPT Search and Google AI Overviews compare head to head?

Factor ChatGPT Search Google AI Overviews
Total search volume Growing rapidly, but still a fraction of Google total Far larger: Google processes the vast majority of searches
Citation click-through rate High: users actively engage with cited sources Lower: many users read the overview and stop
Ease of getting cited Less tied to rank: domain authority went with topic ownership in only 52.5% of pairs (Semrush, July 2026) Ranking still helps: 38% of citations come from top-10 pages, down from 76% (Ahrefs, 2026)
Crawler to allow OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User (GPTBot is training only) Googlebot (Google-Extended affects Gemini, not AI Overviews)
Query types triggered Broad: conversational, research, recommendations, how-to Selective: complex, multi-part, research queries
Content requirements Answer-first pages, visible Q&A, text in the HTML, mentions on sites it trusts The same, plus pages that are indexed and eligible for a snippet
Local business queries Strong: actively cites local businesses for specific queries Strong: Google Business Profile receives 28.6% of local AI citations (BrightLocal, September 2026)
Traffic quality High: informed, decision-ready users High: informed users who click through
Measurement tool GA4 AI Assistant channel (since 13 May 2026) and utm_source=chatgpt.com; OpenAI offers no report Search Console Generative AI report: impressions only, AI Overviews and AI Mode combined, since 31 August 2026

Which platform should you prioritise?

The honest answer is: you do not have to choose. Most of the work that lets ChatGPT cite your content also helps Google AI Overviews cite it. Both need:

  • Their answer crawlers allowed in robots.txt and through your CDN or firewall
  • Answer-first content structure on key pages
  • Visible question-and-answer sections (the FAQPage markup is optional)
  • Mentions on the roundups, review platforms and profiles each engine cites
  • Text served in the HTML, not only after JavaScript runs
  • Real content updates, not just new dates

The crawlers differ. ChatGPT needs OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User; AI Overviews need Googlebot. Neither needs GPTBot or Google-Extended, but blocking Google-Extended removes you from Gemini answers, so treat that as a trade.

If your business is starting from scratch and can only focus one monitoring effort first: start with Google AI Overviews because Google's total search volume is dominant. Search Console's Generative AI report shows your impressions there. Then add ChatGPT through GA4's AI Assistant channel, which is a floor: many AI visits arrive with no referrer. Better still, run the same buyer questions in each assistant every month.

What other AI platforms should your strategy include?

ChatGPT Search and Google AI Overviews are the two largest AI search surfaces today, but they are not the only ones worth considering. A complete AI search strategy also accounts for:

  • Bing Copilot: Microsoft's AI answer layer, powered by Bingbot. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows citations, cited pages and grounding queries for Copilot and Bing's AI summaries (a sample, no clicks). Until September 2026 Bing also underpinned ChatGPT's web results; ChatGPT now runs its own index, so Bing indexing is a Copilot step, not a ChatGPT one.
  • Perplexity AI: a standalone AI search engine with growing usage, particularly among research-oriented users. Its own index is built by PerplexityBot. Reddit takes close to half of its top-ten citation share (Profound), so community presence matters here.
  • Claude AI: Anthropic's AI assistant, which searches its own index built by Claude-SearchBot and fetches pages with Claude-User. ClaudeBot is for training only. Less commonly used as a primary search tool but growing, particularly in professional contexts.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT Search or Google AI Overviews send more traffic to business websites?

For most local businesses, Google AI Overviews generate more total referral traffic because Google has far greater total search volume. However, MKM Building Supplies reported that ChatGPT was sending more visitors than Google's own built-in AI, suggesting ChatGPT referral quality is high. Both platforms are important: optimising for one largely optimises for both, as the content requirements overlap significantly.

Is it easier to get cited in ChatGPT Search or Google AI Overviews?

Neither is easy, and they cite different pages: 91% of citations appear in only one AI assistant. Google AI Overviews still lean on search ranking, with 38% of citations coming from top-10 pages in Ahrefs' 2026 data. ChatGPT leans more on what trusted sites say about you: in Semrush's July 2026 study, higher domain authority went with topic ownership in only 52.5% of pairs.

Should I optimise for ChatGPT Search or Google AI Overviews first?

Optimise both at once, because most of the work overlaps. Let OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User (ChatGPT) and Googlebot (AI Overviews) through robots.txt and your CDN. GPTBot is OpenAI training only, and Google-Extended controls Gemini, not AI Overviews. Then publish answer-first pages with visible question-and-answer sections. Measure the two separately, because they rarely cite the same pages.

What is the difference between how ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews cite sources?

Google AI Overviews show their sources as links alongside the AI summary, most in a sources panel and some inline, which users can click through to read more. ChatGPT Search includes inline citations with source links within the conversational response. Google's citations sit inside the search results page; ChatGPT's sit inside a chat interface. Both benefit from the same content structures: direct answers, visible question-and-answer sections and clear headings. Schema markup has shown no measurable effect on AI citations in controlled testing.
